Module 2A – Specialist Behaviour Support

Implementing positive behaviour support (NDIS Module 2A)

Supporting positive outcomes through structured, person-centred behaviour support.

Empowered Pathways provides support for participants who have a Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP) in place as part of their NDIS supports. Our team works closely with participants, families, behaviour support practitioners, and support coordinators to ensure strategies within the PBSP are implemented consistently and respectfully.

Our focus is on understanding the reasons behind behaviours of concern and supporting participants in ways that promote safety, dignity, and improved quality of life. By following the strategies outlined in each participant’s PBSP, we help create supportive environments that encourage positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and greater independence.

Positive behaviour support – Frequently asked questions

What is Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)?

Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-based approach used within the NDIS to understand and reduce behaviours of concern. It focuses on identifying the reasons behind behaviours and implementing strategies that support positive change.

A PBSP is a structured plan developed by a qualified behaviour support practitioner. It outlines strategies to prevent behaviours of concern, support emotional regulation, and promote safer and more positive behaviours.

Support workers follow the strategies outlined in the participant’s plan. This may include adjusting the environment, supporting communication, using proactive strategies, and responding calmly and consistently when behaviours occur.

Behaviours of concern often occur as a way for a person to communicate unmet needs, frustration, discomfort, or environmental stress. Understanding the underlying cause is key to supporting positive behaviour change.

Support workers record observations and behavioural data as required by the plan. This information helps behaviour support practitioners review strategies and make adjustments where necessary.

If behaviours escalate, support workers follow the strategies outlined in the PBSP to maintain safety and support the participant. The focus remains on de-escalation, maintaining dignity, and reducing distress.
